Wrong Responses to Pain
Jan 27, 2025Wrong responses to emotional pain can set you up for a host of issues.
Emotions get bent out of shape.
Relationships flare.
Stress increases.
Then there is the impact of the emotional and physical tension on your physical body, as well as long term on your health.
In short...it's never good!
So, what is a RIGHT response to stressors that trigger a negative emotional response within yourself?
First thing you want to do is to ACKNOWLEDGE them. Stuffing, ignoring, blaming, or shaming is never healthy. I call this "owning the ouch."
The next thing is to PROCESS your emotions. Here are 3 different ways to do it based on your PERSONALITY type.
First, if you are an Internal Processor, there are a few different ways to process your emotions. Try writing them out by "puking" on paper. By this I mean: saying what you need to say, however you need to say it. Just remember to keep yourself emotionally safe by destroying the evidence immediately after.
Crying can be another great way to release your emotions. It's like pressing the reset button and reducing the internal emotional pressure.
If you are a creative, try expressing it through creative mediums like painting, crafts, or music. Press into the color, texture, or sound to find the release.
Next, if you are more of an External Processors, and need to talk out your thoughts, it will be important to have a safe, reliable, impartial ear to listen to your verbal process. Remember to choose someone who is not a part of the strained dynamics. Choosing an impartial person might make you feel better in the moment, but in the long run, it only becomes more complicated.
Last but not least are those who process what they are feeling using Movement. It is this group of individuals who will find that going for a run, cleaning the house, or playing sports of some kind works best for them.. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure to keep yourself safe, as well as the others, especially if it is a contact sport.
There is much more I could say on this subject, but for now, just focus on giving yourself PERMISSION to PROCESS your emotions in HEALTHIER ways. Find what's right for you and then make a conscious choice to let it out, so it doesn't hurt your health, or your relationships.
