Mud on the vine
Mar 31, 2025
Some seasons in our lives can feel unbearably heavy, overwhelming, and even unrelenting. During this time, problems and overbearing stressors remain as unwelcome, constant, companions.
What becomes especially difficult is when those days turn into years.
It becomes a struggle to get out of bed and the dreaded one next thing threatens to take your breath away.
Your life becomes an act of survival because of the weight and unrelenting nature of things.
Joy and peace are nowhere to be found, existing in your mind only as a faint, distant, memory.
In short,...life is dark, heavy, and threatens to constantly crush the life out of you.
If you can relate, let me summarize a story that I recently read. It was about a vine dresser who told the new land owner that even though this one section of the grape vine was not producing and appeared worthless, it was actually very healthy, and just needed to be washed.
The vine dresser patiently explained that the mud had created a coating and had prevented the branch from absorbing the much needed sunlight, blocking the necessary nutrients from penetrating. He could tell by looking at the root system, not the visible, mud laden branch.
Years later, what had initially appeared to the new owner to be a worthless section of vine, when properly cleaned, had actually produced an exquisite tasting wine.
I tell this story for several reasons.
First I want to encourage you.
You are not alone. We all have seasons where we find ourselves in survival mode because of the relentless life issues that get thrown our way. I don't know one person, myself included, that this hasn't happened to.
Next, in order to keep your sanity, it is critical to classify it as a "season," and that the rest of your life won't always be like it is now. By constantly reminding yourself of this truth, you will help keep hopelessness from taking up permanent residence in your thought process.
It is also important to acknowledge that there are things that need to be "washed" off, or let go of, so you can find that ray of hope, sooner than later and not get physically or emotionally sick.
There are also times when someone needs to come alongside and help clean off the mud because your head is spinning, and the overwhelm threatens to take you out.
If this is you, please reach out.
I'm here to help.
Just like Hanna, Lee, Nancy Carol, Meg and many others who have gone before you, they regained their footing faster than what they could have done on their own, or in their "mud caked" condition.
Know that,,,
I care.
I understand
I won't judge.
